Artist Highlight - Sharon Goulding, Durban North - KZN

Sharon's eye for her subject matter is what first attracted me to her paintings - not driven
by the buyer's market - she pursues the unusual and interesting ......as a result her paintings unfold with dollops of character and charm!

Sharon was at first hard pressed to 'write' something down for me -i.e. when asked to give a reason why she paints - guess she's more comfortable with brush in hand.........

However, she obliged and....herewith why Sharon paints - to quote:

" I gave up my business two years ago and happened to see an ad for art classes - I was immediately drawn to it and knew that I just had to look in to it!! I haven't looked back....I just love to paint! Not a day goes by that I dont get 'itchy' fingers - painting has now become something that I just have to do. I see a painting in everything I look at - sky, trees, photos ......I'm not able to paint fast enough to capture it all.....YET..."

I however, think that Sharon's doing just fine!!

Artist Highlight - Mabel Armitage, La Lucia -KZN

Mabel has to be one of the busiest people I've ever met - that was some two years ago and in that time, Mabel has never ceased to amaze me with the productivity and diversity of her paintings!! Every painting is tackled with a tenacity and verve to best represent the subject .

I took time this week to photograph Mabel's new work and asked her to write a little something about herself that would give us an insight into what actually drives her :

Insightful it is - and I quote

"I've always done some sort of craft. Things like pottery, woodcarving, pewter, batik, flower arranging, cake icing and sewing (wedding dresses/soft furnishings).
About 5 years ago, my daughter persuaded me to join an art group.......it opened up a new world to me!
I have such a passion for painting and want to try all types of painting. I am attracted to doing paintings of people, especially those with character.
The old masters and impressionists have made an impact on my painting.
I just eat and sleep art and wish I had more tim
e to paint!!"

That's it in a nutshell....Mabel just wants to paint!!

Artist Highlight - Corrie Scribante, Mt Edgecombe -KZN

I met Corrie a few years ago and was immediately drawn to her warm, gentle personality.

It is in this manner that Corrie paints - her paintings depict a classic style encompassing the warmth and richness of oils. Corrie uses colour dramatically yet fluidly..........boldly yet with subtle touches.

So why does Corrie paint?............To quote her:

"It's just a passion - I love it!! - I would be lost without it!!"

It's as simple as that - passion!! - something so evident in Corrie's paintings and her life!! I'm so excited about these latest paintings of Corrie's which will be on the exhibition - photos just don't do them justice - texture is lost in a photo and texture/depth is what you'll see in her oils.....

Artist Highlight - Shirley Royal, Berea -KZN

It's quite something, this blogging...putting thoughts down in some sort of organised yet creative way!!....and the person that I want to highlight on this post, Shirley Royal, friend and artist - is just that!! - organised and incredibly creative!!

It's so exciting to have Shirl on board for this next exhibition - the photos of Shirley's oil paintings posted here are just some of the examples of her work. The statement "attention to detail" embodies Shirley's work and for that matter, her lifestyle!

I asked Shirley why she paints - she had this to say:
" I have always known that creativity is what we were created for - and that this finds its outworkings in every facet of our lives! It is only in recent years that I have been priveleged to find myself in the position of being encouraged and mentored by an artist friend to explore it (art) in earnest on canvas and paper. It has been deeply satisfying to play with different mediums and make all sorts of discoveries along the way and I look forward to the journey yet untravelled......."

The leaf shown here is an example of the detail and care taken in Shirley's drawings

Shirley is currently working on 3 botanical drawings for the exhibition......
Also shown here is a photo of one of the botanicals - a Chinese Guava
